Is an online psychologist in Australia covered by Medicare?

Yes. If you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) from your GP and you see an AHPRA-registered psychologist who offers Medicare-rebated sessions, you may be able to claim a rebate for Telehealth appointments. The rebate amount is the same as it is for in-person sessions. A gap fee may still apply, depending on the clinician’s fees and session length. If you do not have an MHTP, some private health policies may contribute instead. If you’re unsure what you’re eligible for, we can help you work it out before you book.

How do online psychology sessions work?

Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?

In most cases, you don’t need a referral to see a psychologist. You can self-refer by simply contacting us and booking an appointment. However, if you’re seeking support under Medicare’s Better Access initiative or through NDIS, you may need a referral from your GP.

Your GP can provide a Mental Health Care Plan or NDIS plan that may entitle you to a rebate or funding for sessions. If you’re unsure, we’re happy to guide you through the process and help you access the support you need.

How much do psychology sessions cost?

The cost of a psychology session can vary depending on the type of session and your funding arrangements. For those who are eligible for Medicare, NDIS, or private health insurance, you may be able to claim part or all of the session fees.
If you’re accessing sessions privately, we offer competitive rates to ensure that quality psychological support is accessible. What can I expect during my first session?

Is online psychology as effective as in person therapy?

Online appointments are often available sooner than in-person waitlists, and many people can get started within a few days, depending on clinician availability. Booking is straightforward: contact the IPA admin team or complete the enquiry link on our website for our staff to contact you, complete a short intake form, and you will receive information about the soonest upcoming available appointment times.
